Burnaby Village Museum is pleased to offer a variety of hands-on curriculum-connected programs in both English and French.

Outreach program

Let us come to you! Our museum instructors will visit you in the comforts of your own classroom to deliver this program. $115 or $125/class (depending on distance). Some technical equipment is required: laptop, projector and screen, as well as 6-10 devices for students groups. 

Museum Detectives
Grades 5 &10
Tuesday to Friday, October-May
Start times: between 10 am or noon

Think you’ve got what it takes to be a historian? Test your detective skills as you analyze primary sources focused on the Chinese Canadian experience. Learn how Canada’s past immigration policies negatively impacted Chinese Canadians and the ways this community persevered and prospered despite discrimination. This program includes a virtual scavenger hunt in the Way Sang Yuen Wat Kee & Co. herbalist shop.

Self-guided programs

Museum interpreters welcome you into many of the site’s exhibits. Plan 3 hours for this self-guided visit. $8.50 per student. Carousel ride and take-home craft included. 

Winter Wonder
Grades K-9
Tuesday to Friday, November 28-December 20
Start times: Available every 15 minutes from 10 am-12 pm

Discover many vibrant winter celebrations while exploring all the Burnaby Village Museum has to offer during Heritage Christmas. This self-guided program showcases diverse cultures and communities—at home and abroad—and the different ways we celebrate the season. Program includes a carousel ride and a take-home craft. 

Spring Discovery Days 
Grades K-9
Tuesday to Friday, June
Start times: Available every 15 minutes from 10 am-12 pm

Tour the museum's exhibits and gardens at your own pace while learning about cultural diversity, community and our local environment.

Guided programs

Enjoy 90 minutes onsite with a museum interpreter exploring specific themes related to BC’s curriculum. $8.50 per student.

Navigating the Neighbourhood
Grades K-2
Tuesday to Friday, January-May
Start times: 10 am or noon

Get to know the Burnaby Village Museum neighbourhood. Learn about the people and places that make up our community and what it means to be part of a neighbourhood. Explore a century-old interurban tram, a general store, and a heritage home while making connections to your own life and community. This program is also available in French.

The Three R's 
Grades 1-3
Tuesday to Friday, January-May
Start times: 10 am or noon

Class is in session! Explore a one-room schoolhouse while making connections to your own classroom and community. Experience school in a 1920s setting while testing your reading, writing, and ‘rithmetic. This program is also available in French.

Coast Salish School Program
Grades 1-4
Tuesday to Friday, April-May
Start times: 10 am or noon

Learn about Coast Salish culture from an Indigenous Educator. 

Tools & Fuels
Grades 4-6
Tuesday to Friday, January-May
Start times: 10 am or noon

Uncover the history and power hidden within coal. Learn how this diamond in the rough helped shape societies and communities. Watch a movie and explore the blacksmiths’ forge and steam engine to discover how coal can be used as fuel sources to create energy and run machines. 

Fairground Physics
Grades 4-6
Tuesday to Friday, January-April
Start times: 10 am or noon

Click, boom, bang, clang—what makes the carousel go round? It may seem all fun and games, but this 100-year-old structure is in fact a powerful machine, propelling some 16,000 kilograms of wood, metal and glass with every ride. Discover the inner workings of the carousel through measurement, geometry, sound and force.

Let's Talk about the Past 
Grades 8-12 and Adult ELL
Tuesday to Friday, January-May
Start times: 10 am or noon

What can you tell me about the past? Talk with your museum guide as you explore the Matriarch’s Garden, a Chinese Canadian herbalist shop, and a one-room schoolhouse. Using visuals, objects, and scripts, this program will get everyone talking. Suitable for teenage and adult intermediate ELL students.
