what is a heritage fair?

A Heritage Fair is similar to a science fair, except that students do their projects on Canadian history and heritage. Since its beginning in 1993, the Heritage Fairs Program has grown to include projects from more than 200,000 students across Canada each year.

Teachers and parents of grade 4 to 10 students from Burnaby, New Westminster and the Tri-Cities are encouraged to organize a class- or school-based fair, from which participants are selected for the Rivers to Sea Regional Heritage Fair. At the Regional Fair, students will be interviewed and their entries adjudicated by a panel of community judges. All students are recognized for their participation. Several projects are chosen to represent the Rivers to Sea Regional Heritage Fair at the Provincial Heritage Fair.

why hold a school fair?

  • Students create cross-curricular projects, thereby developing a variety of learning skills.
  • All students are given a voice to tell their own stories in their own ways. Multiple perspectives are encouraged! There are many opportunities for home/school/community interaction.
  • Student enthusiasm, creativity, and passion can make the Fairs a highlight of the school year!

We invite participation from individuals or small groups of students, from a whole class, or from the entire school. We encourage projects in English, French and (for the RBC Award) Aboriginal languages.

it's fun!

There are prizes to be won, demonstrations, a scavenger hunt, admission to the Burnaby Village and free rides on our 1912 CW Parker Carousel! Students and teachers are given passes so they can return with their family and friends on Saturday, May 12, to attend the Heritage Fair Awards Ceremony and enjoy Burnaby Village.
