Description
All ages, family-friendly
In partnership with the City of Burnaby’s Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation Department and Civic Innovation Lab, SFU professors Cara Tremain and Sabrina Higgins, together with Burnaby’s Civic Archaeologist Chris Verral, the talented team host hands‑on, interactive archaeology stations.
Hands-on activities: Multi-Purpose Room (20)
11 am-3:30 pm
- Wednesdays, March 18 & 25
- Fridays, March 20 & 27
Explore archaeology through hands‑on learning that brings Burnaby’s past to life. Discover local archaeology and the broader discipline, learn about SFU Archaeology and Museum Collections alongside Burnaby Village Museum’s collections, examine the medieval medallions donation, and explore concepts like stratigraphy, dating and how archaeologists dig and uncover the past—all while learning how Reconciliation connects to archaeological practice.
- Medieval Medallion donation – visitors can learn more about this celebrated chance find that made its way from a thrift shop to the SFU Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology for further research and investigation. SFU will have 3D printed copies of these artifacts for visitors to engage in and learn from.
- Archaeological dig “sandbox” – visitors can dig through a rubber crumb sandbox to find 3D printed artifacts and learn about the processes involved in an archaeological dig.
- Stratigraphy interactive – visitors learn about stratigraphic layers underground and how these layers are an important dating technique. (e.g. how to tell the age of excavated artifacts?)
Archaeology Talk – Brookfield Hall (25)
Fridays, March 20 & 27, 1-2 pm
