Join Us for Truth and Reconciliation Day at the Museum
To register: Walking Together: Truth & Reconciliation Day
This Truth and Reconciliation Day, the Indigenous team invites you to participate in a thoughtful series of workshops centered on Indigenous knowledge and reconciliation efforts. These sessions include:
- A discussion on Coast Salish language revitalization, where participants will learn words and phrases in Sḵwx̱wú7mesh sníchim (Squamish language).
- A weaving revitalization workshop led by host nation weaver Rita Kompst, which explores the importance of revitalizing Coast Salish weaving traditions. Participants will be invited to take part in a collaborative weaving activity.
- A myth-busting workshop on colonization and Indigenous rights, where participants will explore and unpack common misconceptions about topics such as the Indian Act, residential schools, and Indigenous sovereignty.
- An introductory discussion on Indigenous Residential Schools, offering historical context and an opportunity to reflect on their impacts.
Between each workshop, participants will have time to decompress and engage in additional activities, including:
- Indigenous nature and conservation talks
- A reconciliation-focused documentary screening in the Central Park Theatre
- Pin-making for Truth and Reconciliation Day
- A walk-through of an interactive timeline exploring Indigenous history in Cedar Grove
Each workshop runs for 30 minutes, with 15-minute activity breaks in between. Optional time will be offered at the end for reflection, sharing, and questions.
Please note: All workshops happen at the same time, with groups rotating through each station in sequence. This ensures every space is activated and every participant gets the full experience.
Whether you are just beginning in your Truth and Reconciliation learning journey, or whether you have taken great strides in supporting Indigenous communities, we welcome you to spend a few hours with us as we walk together in a good way towards reconciliation.
Registration is required.
