Burnaby Village Museum recognized for exhibit on Chinese Canadian History
March 5, 2021
The City of Burnaby is honoured to be recognized by the Chinese Canadian Historical Society of BC for an exhibition at the Burnaby Village Museum highlighting the experiences of Burnaby’s early Chinese Canadian residents.
Across the Pacific was selected for the Larry Wong Prize, which recognizes exhibitions and programs that make an impact regarding Chinese Canadian history and heritage .
“This exhibition offers a window to understanding Chinese Canadian experiences in Burnaby and their contributions to the municipality’s developing economy since the late 1800s,” said exhibit co-curator Denise Fong. “One of the highlights of this project was working alongside families who were discovering new things about their family’s history through our research. The exhibition has resonated with many of our visitors, whether they are third generation Chinese Canadians or newly arrived immigrants interested in learning more about Canadian heritage.”
Across the Pacific features stories, photographs, and artifacts illustrating the history and legacy of Chinese migration to Burnaby from the 1880s to 1970s. Researchers explored the experiences of Chinese Canadian farm families in South Burnaby, who have helped feed the community since its earliest days. The exhibit is presented in three written languages – English as well as traditional and simplified Chinese – and includes audio components featuring several Cantonese dialects.
Burnaby Village Museum and the City are committed to increasing awareness of Chinese Canadian history. Last spring, City Council approved a multi-year project that will expand research into the contributions of Chinese Canadians to the development of Burnaby.
“This project will result in a learning resource guide, farm map and publication, so that the stories told in Across the Pacific can continue to be shared in the community,” said Heritage Planner Lisa Codd.
Across the Pacific returns as the feature exhibit at the Burnaby Village Museum for 2021.
